Make Black Tea At Home:
Ingredients & Tools for Making Black Tea at Home:
• 2 teaspoons (about 2 g) of black tea leaves
• A way to boil water (a stovetop or electric kettle) for boiling water
• A way of steeping the tea leaves (this can be either a teapot or some other container that can hold 300-400 ml of liquid)
• A slice of lemon (to add to your tea if you'd like lemon black tea)
• 2-3 mint leaves (if you want mint black tea)
• 2-3 tulsi leaves (if you want to make black tea with tulsi)
• 1 tablespoon of honey (for sweetness) as sweetener.
Note: If you do not have a teapot, any regular container that can hold enough liquid (about 300 - 400 ml) will work as well.
The four basic steps for making black tea, either hot or cold, are the following: 1) Boil at least 300-400 ml of newly boiled water for about three minutes to produce an intense boil (look for bubbles forming and rising to the surface). 2) Place two teaspoons (2 g.) of loose black tea leaves in your teapot. 3) Once you have boiled water, pour that boiling water over the loose black tea leaves in your teapot. 4) Let the tea steep for at least 4-5 minutes, but no longer than 5 minutes to avoid over-steeping.
TIP #1 - The boiling point of water for black teas is around 212°F (100°C), so once the water reaches that high of a temperature, you should start seeing rapid bubbles form and collect at the surface before pouring the water over the loose black tea leaves.
TIP #2 - Steeping your tea leaves will yield an unbalanced cup of black tea after 5 minutes. So don't steep them for longer than 5 minutes. Letting your black tea leaves steep for over 5 minutes will cause the tea's tannins to produce excessive bitterness.
Your tea should taste great!
We are fans of homemade iced black tea, especially since black Ceylon (Sri Lanka) tea is our choice for preparing an invigoratingly refreshing and naturally energizing drink that has an excellent balance of flavor. Since you can brew an entire pot early in the morning, you will enjoy the same refreshing beverage all day long.
How to Make Iced Black Tea at Home
Bring 300-400 ml (approx. 2 cups) of fresh water to a rolling boil (212°F/100°C).
Using a teapot and two teaspoons of loose black tea leaves, pour the boiling water over the leaves in the teapot.
Steep for no more than 4-5 minutes; remove the lid and stir well.
Place the teapot into the freezer for approx. 2-3 hours.
Once the tea has had a chance to cool, remove it from the freezer and stir again, then pour it into an ice-cold glass.
Add ice cubes as desired.
Tip #1: When making iced black tea, remember to use only 2 teaspoons of dried tea leaves per liter to ensure that your iced black tea is perfectly balanced and not overly strong.
Tip #2: Do not add too many ice cubes, as this will dilute the flavor of your iced black tea. Use just enough ice to create a refreshing iced tea.
Alternative methods of making Flavored Blended Black Iced Tea
To make Black Iced Tea with Lemon: Add 1 lemon slice to the pot with tea (add second lemon slice later if necessary) and refrigerate it overnight (Step 5)
To make Black Iced Tea with Mint: Add 2-3 mint leaves (freshly washed) to the pot with tea (add additional fresh mint leaves to taste), and refrigerate it overnight (Step 5)
To make Black Iced Tea with Tulsi: Add 2-3 leaves of fresh tulsi (add additional fresh tulsi leaves to taste), and refrigerate it overnight (Step 5)
Tip: The extra ingredients you have added (1 lemon slice/2-3 mint leaves/2-3 tulsi leaves) will remain in the teapot along with the black tea leaves while freezing; therefore, do not exceed the above recommended amounts so the Svamingo Ceylon Black Tea retains its natural aroma with a little added flavor.
